Keiichi Hashimoto visit / Hungarian kenshi's hansoku for throwing

Keichi Hashimoto (Renshi 6 dan) will be visiting Melbourne for four days next weekend. Here is his training itinerary:


Friday 3rd May - VKR Friday night keiko (7:00pm warm up, 7:30pm start keiko)
Saturday 4th May - Open training at Kenshikan Dojo (2:00pm - 4:00pm)
Sunday 5th May - MBK training at Kenshikan Dojo (9:30am - 11:30am)

After doing a little Google jutsu, I also found his Twitter account, his competitor profile on the All Japan Kendo Federation website, and an interview where he shows off his Hummer and talks about starting Kendo in kindergarten (!) and how his other passion is music. He apparently had a band and for a while considered giving up Kendo to focus on music.

All bogu-wearing kenshi are welcome to join in training with him. Even newer members could benefit from watching him in action.

It looks like the video keeps getting deleted. First it was on Youtube, then it got made private. Then it popped up on Vimeo, and now that one's been deleted. However a Belgian blogger very presciently took screenshots of the video before it was taken down. 


The match was Hungary versus Switzerland. The Swiss player has the abbreviation "CHE" on his tare, which is the three letter code for Switzerland, like AUS is for Australia. It stands for "Conferatio Helvetica".

There is a lengthy discussion on Kendo World about this legality of this action and people's reactions/opinions of it. Geoff Salmon sensei, who was a shinpan at those championships but who didn't see it himself because he was busy with another match, discusses his thoughts here. He also makes reference to the same "You Asked For It" video from the 1950s which I was telling some of you about yesterday after training. It includes numerous attempts at ashibarai or foot-sweeps. Watch out for when they try and hook their leg around their opponent's. The presenter's style is hilarious.

Former All Japan champion, and star of his own NHK documentary , Nishimura Hidehisa produced this workout routine for the All Japan Kendo Federation last year during the early stages of lockdown. It's an excellent HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) routine, sometimes called Tabata Training after the coach who invented the idea. Results and pics - 2008 VJKC

Another great Victorian Junior Kendo Championships today. The standard gets better every year. This year we had two divisions, 14 & under and 16 & under. Unfortunately only three Victorian dojo were represented, Nanseikan (of course!), Fudoshin and Ballarat. Firstly thanks to the shinpan who came along today: Gary Oliver, Khay-Lin Teoh sensei, Richard Ward, Jason Widdy and Andrew Lam. Thanks also to all the parents for bringing their boys (and they were all boys this year, more girl-kendoka needed!) as well as supporting their kendo throughout the year. Newcomer Yuichiro Sato of Fudoshin won his first match in his first ever taikai against Thomas Goh, also of Fudoshin. Sato (red) scoring men against Thomas Goh. Koryu that are not like Kendo at all

In the previous post I listed the various branches of Itto Ryu and asked you to consider the similarities between their use of the sword and Kendo. Sometimes when one becomes used to a certain way of doing things, one can fall into the trap of thinking that is the only, or maybe the best, way of doing things. In learning iai kata of Tatsumi Ryu, we are trying to break out of that thinking by exposing ourselves to a system devised long before even the Itto Ryu was founded. This means that there are some fundamental differences in how the sword is used.  In these posts I am mostly interested in the differences in how to swing the sword. In Kendo, and indeed in most of the styles of iaido practiced today, the fundamental cutting action is a straight up-and-down action often referred to as kirioroshi , cutting through or cutting down.
