Response to 25 May 2021 COVID restrictions - Kendo training to continue - please take care

Image
Training will continue at Nanseikan using masks as we have been, but we will be taking more care than in recent weeks until the restrictions are lifted. As well as the points in the poster above, please note the following instructions: Training will be limited to 30 people inside the dojo. If you feel unwell, get tested and don't come to training until you receive a negative result. If you are eligible, get vaccinated. If you have visited one of the recent exposure sites, check what the instructions are for that site and follow them. Masks must be worn properly (over nose and mouth) at all times. Bring more than one mask to training and change to a fresh mask halfway through. Come dressed in hakama and kendogi to the dojo. There will be no using the toilets or other parts of the hall. Don't share or touch equipment other than that of members of your own household.  Sanitise hands before and after touching any objects or fittings in the dojo. Training will move to a lower im...

Nishimura sensei's Kendo HIIT routine

Image
Former All Japan champion, and star of his own NHK documentary , Nishimura Hidehisa produced this workout routine for the All Japan Kendo Federation last year during the early stages of lockdown. It's an excellent HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) routine, sometimes called Tabata Training after the coach who invented the idea. Basically it has been theorised that you get better results in terms of fitness and overall body strength from short, intense and focused workouts, than you do from extended workouts. Some say it is also beneficial for improving endurance and longevity . There is even some evidence to support that it kickstarts mitochondrial function , that you're exercising at a cellular level. That's pretty amazing. Whatever the research says, it is very easy to feel the positive effects of interval training and it has several other benefits: PROS It doesn't take long, so you can fit it into a busy schedule   You can do it by yourself   You can do it al...

Back to training this Saturday, woohoo!

Dan announced and end to lockdown as of midnight tonight so that means we are good to go! Our COVID policy covers us for current requirements. Remember: scan QR code at entry for contact tracing mask or shield at all times reduce kiai no taiatari good hygiene at all times (sanitise hands regularly, don't touch things in dojo unnecessarily, come to training already dressed if possible, no access to armoury, BYO first aid kit) See you on Saturday!

Two hours training next Saturday/ survey on change of training times

This is a short video of the right-foot-first, small men cut technique we looked at yesterday. It was great to train face to face finally! Everything went well and it was great to welcome back Soon properly and also two new members, Nick from Cairns (previously from Ballarat) and Nate our one and only Zoom beginner! In light of reaching the 28-day milestone of no new local cases of the virus we trained largely without masks but with other COVID-safe modifications to training. However if individuals wish to train with masks as some did on Saturday that is of course their right. It is likely that in future we may have new cases in the community and so we'll have to go back to a more strict mask-wearing regime during training, but for now I think we have earned the right to train mask-free without danger if we wish. Some points for those who haven't yet been to Latrobe:  parking is free after hours, even though the signs all say 'permit only'. So no need to find a parking ...

We will be training in the same space, which will make things easier and more flexible I have changed the other instructions below to reflect this. Some, such as the overall plan for training, remain the same. T...
